How the French A1 tests work

They help answer a simple question after each unit: could I do this in a real situation? The test on “ordering coffee and paying the bill” is about ordering a drink and paying, “telling the doctor where it hurts” checks that you can name where it hurts, and “answering and making phone calls” covers the phrases you need when a call starts and ends. Each test runs 45 minutes with 8 questions and a total of 20 points, with no dictionary, which mirrors the conditions of a diploma exam without the stress. The key says how many points each question earns, so you know at once which chapter to reread. Use the tests to check yourself at your own pace, or give them to students in a course that uses the A1 lessons.

How long is a test and how is it scored?

Can I use the tests as a midterm?

Yes. Pick the chapters your class has covered, from “saying who you are in French” up to the one you want to include, and add the scores. Every test uses the same 20-point scale, so totals compare fairly.
