Pharmacy vocabulary in French: the lesson
How do you say what hurts in French?
At the pharmacy, start with the problem. French uses avoir mal à + the body part, with the article that goes with the noun. The article joins à when it is le or les.
| With… | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| masculine (le) | mal au | J’ai mal au dos. — My back hurts. |
| feminine (la) | mal à la | J’ai mal à la gorge. — I have a sore throat. |
| vowel (l’) | mal à l’ | J’ai mal à l’oreille. — My ear hurts. |
| plural (les) | mal aux | J’ai mal aux dents. — My teeth hurt. |
Watch out
English says “my head hurts” or “I have a headache”. French says J’ai mal à la tête. with the article la, not ma. Do not translate “my” word for word here.
How do you ask for medicine and follow the directions?
| French | English |
|---|---|
| une ordonnance | a prescription |
| un médicament, des comprimés | a medicine, tablets |
| un sirop, une pommade | a syrup, an ointment |
| trois fois par jour | three times a day |
| avant / après les repas | before / after meals |
| la fièvre, la toux, un rhume | fever, cough, a cold |
Examples
- Bonjour, j’ai une ordonnance du docteur Kouyaté. — Hello, I have a prescription from Dr. Kouyaté.
- Avez-vous quelque chose contre la toux ? — Do you have something for a cough?
How do you give health advice with il faut and vous devriez?
Rule: il faut and vous devriez + infinitive
Il faut + infinitive says what is necessary: Il faut boire beaucoup d’eau. — You must drink a lot of water. Negative: Il ne faut pas. For softer, polite advice use vous devriez (you should): Vous devriez vous reposer. — You should rest. The forms of devoir in the conditional: je devrais, tu devrais, vous devriez.
More advice
- Il ne faut pas prendre ce sirop le soir. — Do not take this syrup in the evening.
- Vous devriez voir un médecin si la fièvre continue. — You should see a doctor if the fever continues.
Culture note
French pharmacies are marked with a green cross. Pharmacists can advise you for minor problems, and with a prescription you show your carte Vitale, the health insurance card, to be partly reimbursed.
Zoé’s tip
To sound polite, add s’il vous plaît and use vous devriez rather than a command. Prenez-le sounds like an order; Vous devriez le prendre sounds like friendly advice.
Key points to remember
- Avoir mal à joins the article: au dos, à la tête, à l’oreille, aux dents.
- Il faut + infinitive means “you must” and stays the same; the negative is il ne faut pas.
- Vous devriez + infinitive is polite advice (“you should”).
- Directions use fois par jour, avant / après les repas and pendant … jours.
- A prescription is une ordonnance; the insurance card is la carte Vitale.
