Narrating an anecdote with three past tenses – French B1 worksheet with Zoé, the Français PDF coach

Quick answer: To tell a story in French, use the passé composé for the events that move the plot, the imparfait for the setting, feelings and actions in progress, and the plus-que-parfait for anything that had already happened. For French B1 students practising telling a story in French, this worksheet gives 20 problems from easy to hard: passé composé or imparfait?, form the imparfait and match the connector. The answer key is on a separate page, and the worksheet is a free printable PDF.

This worksheet trains the three narrative tenses and the connectors that hold an anecdote together. The first problems review forms and choices between the passé composé and the imparfait; the middle ones add the plus-que-parfait and translation.

The level is CEFR B1 and the standard is spoken production: the last problems ask for a short story that could be told aloud at work or with friends. Work from level 1 to level 3.
