How the French 2 tests work

A test has 8 questions worth 20 points in all, pairing short grammar items with a piece of writing, so the final score reflects accuracy and also the ability to build a sentence unaided. The test on “remembering the past with the imparfait” asks the student to put verbs into the imparfait and to choose between tenses, while “want, can and must: three key verbs” checks vouloir, pouvoir and devoir in the forms students most often mix up. For “which one? asking with quel and lequel”, the student has to pick between quel and lequel in context instead of reciting a rule. Results from different chapters can be compared side by side and averaged into a term grade. When a score drops, the key shows exactly where the points were lost. Use the tests after each unit, as a review before an exam, or as a home check on a student who says the last chapter was easy.

Frequently asked questions

Who are the French 2 tests for?

It is meant for second-year students who know the present tense and are ready for the past, pronouns and comparisons. Teachers, tutors and independent learners can all use them.

How long is a test and how is it scored?

Each test has 8 questions, totals 20 points and is planned for 45 minutes, with no dictionary. The answer key in Part 2 gives the points for every question, including the test on “coming, returning and just happened”.

Can I use the tests as a midterm?

Yes. Pick the chapters your class has covered, from “telling what happened with avoir” up to the one you want to include, and add the scores. Every test uses the same 20-point scale, so totals compare fairly.
