French future perfect (futur antérieur): formation, uses and practice

French verb conjugation: 150 verbs in every tense

The French future perfect (le futur antérieur) is useful for plans, deadlines and guesses about the past. Its structure is the same as the passé composé, with the auxiliary in the future.

The essentials: The futur antérieur is the French “will have done”. Form it with the futur simple of avoir or être plus the past participle: j’aurai fini, elle sera partie. French also uses it after quand, dès que, lorsque and après que when the first action must be finished before a future action, where English uses the present perfect (“when I have finished”).

When do you use the futur antérieur?

Use French English
Action finished before a deadline Demain à midi, j’aurai terminé. Tomorrow at noon I will have finished.
After quand, dès que, lorsque, après que (future) Dès que tu auras fini, tu pourras sortir. As soon as you have finished, you can go out.
Order of two future actions Quand il sera parti, nous mangerons. When he has left, we will eat.
Guess about the past Il n’est pas là : il aura oublié. He is not here: he must have forgotten.
Duration limit with d’ici D’ici dix ans, nous aurons déménagé. Within ten years, we will have moved.

How do you form the futur antérieur?

Futur simple of avoir or être + past participle.

The auxiliary choice and the agreement are exactly the same as in the passé composé: elle sera arrivée, elles seront arrivées.

Futur antérieur and futur simple together

Order of events French
A first, then B Quand j’aurai fini mon devoir (A), je regarderai un film (B).
Same time (no priority) Quand j’arriverai, tu m’attendras.
Condition Si tu as fini avant moi, attends-moi. (present after si)

Note that the si clause uses the present or the passé composé, never the future.

Common mistakes English speakers make

  • Using the passé composé after quand in a future context: Quand j’ai fini, je t’appellerai is not natural; say Quand j’aurai fini, je t’appellerai.
  • Using the present where French wants the future in time clauses: Dès qu’il arrive, je pars means a habit; for a plan, say Dès qu’il sera arrivé, je partirai.
  • Confusing it with the conditional perfect: j’aurai fini (future) versus j’aurais fini (hypothetical).
  • Forgetting agreement: Elle sera parti should be Elle sera partie.
