The past imperative (l’impératif passé) is a small but useful form. English uses “make sure you have…” or “be done by…” instead. Learn to read it, and use it for deadlines.
The essentials: The impératif passé asks that an action be finished by a given moment: aie fini avant midi (have finished before noon). Form it with the imperative of avoir or être plus the past participle: aie fini, ayons fini, ayez fini; sois parti(e), soyons parti(e)s, soyez parti(e)(s). It is rare and appears mostly in formal instructions, rules and written advice.

When do you use the past imperative?
| Use | French | English |
|---|---|---|
| Deadline | Aie fini ton travail avant midi. | Have your work finished before noon. |
| Be gone by a time | Soyez partis avant la nuit. | Be gone before nightfall. |
| Formal rule | Ayez réglé la facture avant le premier du mois. | Make sure you have paid the bill before the first of the month. |
| Wish or encouragement | Sois rentré avant dix heures. | Be home before ten. |
It is almost always followed by a time limit (avant midi, d’ici demain, dès que). In everyday French people prefer the present imperative with a deadline: Finis avant midi. or the future perfect: Tu auras fini avant midi.
How do you form the past imperative?
Imperative of avoir or être (aie, ayons, ayez / sois, soyons, soyez) + past participle.
| parler | finir | aller | venir |
|---|---|---|---|
| aie parlé | aie fini | sois allé(e) | sois venu(e) |
| ayons parlé | ayons fini | soyons allé(e)s | soyons venu(e)s |
| ayez parlé | ayez fini | soyez allé(e)(s) | soyez venu(e)(s) |
The participle agrees as in the passé composé. Pronominal verbs do not have a past imperative.
Common mistakes English speakers make
- Using the passé composé as a command: Tu as fini avant midi is a statement. The command is Aie fini avant midi.
- Using the wrong auxiliary form: Aies fini (with -s) is wrong, say Aie fini.
- Forgetting the agreement with être: Soyez parti becomes Soyez partis (plural) or Soyez parties.
- Using the past imperative without a time reference. It needs a deadline.
