French past participle: formation, agreement and practice

French verb conjugation: 150 verbs in every tense

The French past participle is the key to the passé composé, the pluperfect, the passive and many adjectives. It is not difficult to form, but agreement needs practice.

The essentials: The past participle (participe passé) is the building block of every compound tense. Regular endings: -é (parler → parlé), -i (finir → fini), -u (vendre → vendu). Many common verbs are irregular (fait, pris, mis, vu, eu, été). It agrees with the subject after être and the passive, and with a direct object placed before the verb after avoir. Used alone it works as an adjective: la porte ouverte.

Agreement rules

With être agrees with the subject Elle est partie. Ils sont partis. Elles sont parties.
Pronominal verbs agrees with the reflexive pronoun if it is the direct object Elle s’est levée. Elle s’est lavé les mains.
With avoir no agreement with the subject; agrees with a direct object before the verb J’ai vu Marie. Je l’ai vue. La robe que j’ai achetée.

Always invariable été and pu never agree Elle a été malade. Elles ont pu venir.

Participles that already end in -s or -t (pris, mis, fait, dit) keep the same form in the masculine singular and plural: le cadeau qu’il a pris, les cadeaux qu’il a pris. The feminine forms are prise, prises, faite, faites.

Uses of the past participle

  • Compound tenses: J’ai mangé. J’avais mangé. Elle sera arrivée.
  • Passive voice: Le livre est lu par tous les élèves. (The book is read by all the students.)
  • Adjective: une fenêtre ouverte (an open window), les yeux fermés (eyes closed).
  • Absolute construction in writing: Le travail terminé, il est sorti. (Once the work was finished, he went out.)

Common mistakes English speakers make

  • Forming irregular participles on the English model: prendu (prendre) is wrong, say pris.
  • Forgetting that the participle of avoir is eu (pronounced like u).
  • Agreeing the participle with the subject after avoir: Elle a mangée is wrong, say Elle a mangé.
  • Not agreeing with a preceding direct object: Les pommes que j’ai acheté should be Les pommes que j’ai achetées.
  • Confusing -é (participle) and -er (infinitive): J’ai manger is wrong. A good test: replace the verb by vendre (J’ai vendu → participle) or prendre (Je vais prendre → infinitive).
