a room Je voudrais une chambre double.
length of stay … pour trois nuits.
equipment … avec douche / sans balcon.

availability Avez-vous une chambre libre ?

How do you say dates?

French puts the day first, then the month, and months have no capital letter. Use cardinal numbers: le quatorze juillet, le trois août. Only the first of the month is ordinal: le premier mai. For a stay, say du douze au quatorze mai (from the 12th to the 14th of May).

When you arrive, give your name and show an ID: J’ai une réservation au nom de Benali. — I have a reservation under the name Benali. The receptionist then gives you a key or a card and explains the hours for breakfast. Listen for the numbers: the hour, the floor, and the room number.

What does the receptionist ask?

  • Pour combien de nuits ? — For how many nights?
  • C’est à quel nom ? — Under what name?
  • Pouvez-vous remplir cette fiche ? — Can you fill in this form?
  • Votre chambre est au deuxième étage. — Your room is on the second floor.

Useful words: la clé (key), l’ascenseur (elevator), la réception, le petit-déjeuner, une nuit. A price: La chambre coûte quarante-cinq euros la nuit.

Common mistake

English speakers write May 12 and capitalize months. French says le 12 mai, with no capital and no word for on. Also, compris means included, not understood, when talking about breakfast.

Stars and tax

French hotels carry an official rating from one to five stars. Many towns also add a small tourist tax, la taxe de séjour, per person and per night, often paid at the desk.

Zoé’s tip

Write your dates in French before calling: du douze au quatorze mai. Hearing and saying them aloud once makes the real phone call much calmer.

Key points to remember

  • Pour plus a number states the length of stay: pour deux nuits.
  • Avec means with and sans means without: avec douche, sans balcon.
  • Petit-déjeuner compris means breakfast is included.
  • Dates go day first and months are lowercase: le 3 août.
  • Only the first of the month is ordinal: le premier mai.
