Family in French: the answers explained

Problem 1 Match the relatives

1-d, 2-e, 3-b, 4-a, 5-c. Each noun is learned with its article: la grand-mère is feminine, l’oncle and le fils are masculine.

Problem 2 Choose the article

1. la sœur · 2. l’oncle · 3. le père · 4. la cousine · 5. les parents. L’ replaces le or la before a vowel sound; les is the plural.

Problem 3 Name the female relative

1. la cousine · 2. la femme · 3. la sœur · 4. la grand-mère · 5. la fille. Only cousin simply adds an -e; the others have a different word.

Problem 4 Mon, ma or mes

1. mon père · 2. ma sœur · 3. mes parents · 4. ma tante · 5. mes cousins. The possessive follows gender and number of the noun.

Problem 5 Status words

1. mariée · 2. divorcé · 3. veuve · 4. célibataire · 5. pacsée. Women add -e; veuf changes to veuve; célibataire never changes.

Problem 6 Ton, ta or tes

1. ton · 2. Ta · 3. tes · 4. Ton · 5. tes. In item 4, amie is feminine but starts with a vowel, so ton amie.

Problem 7 How old are they?

1. Ma mère a 61 ans. · 2. Mon frère a 17 ans. · 3. Ses cousins ont 8 et 11 ans. · 4. J’ai 45 ans. · 5. Notre fille a 3 ans. French uses avoir, never être, for age.

Problem 8 Read the family tree

1. mon père · 2. ma tante · 3. ma sœur · 4. mes grands-parents · 5. ma mère. Seydou is the owner, so every possessive is in the first person.

Problem 9 Son, sa or ses

1. son · 2. sa · 3. ses · 4. son · 5. sa. The owner’s gender does not matter. Item 4: amie starts with a vowel, so son.

Problem 10 Our, your, their

1. notre · 2. vos · 3. leur · 4. leurs · 5. nos. Leur is singular, leurs is plural; the same holds for notre / nos and votre / vos.

Problem 11 Translate into French

1. Mon frère est célibataire. · 2. Sa sœur est mariée. · 3. Nous avons deux enfants. · 4. Je n’ai pas de sœur. · 5. Leur cousin est sympa. Note pas de after a negative.

Problem 12 Translate into English

1. My grandmother is 82. · 2. My uncle is divorced. · 3. My parents live in Annecy. · 4. Your cousin is very funny. · 5. Our son is shy.

Problem 13 Say no

1. Je n’ai pas de frère. · 2. Elle n’a pas d’enfants. · 3. Nous n’avons pas de fille. · 4. Ils n’ont pas de cousins à Dakar. · 5. Tu n’as pas de sœur ? De becomes d’ before a vowel.

Problem 14 Describe the person

1. petite, blonde · 2. drôles, sympas · 3. timide · 4. âgé · 5. grandes. Add -e for feminine and -s for plural; sympa only takes the -s.

Problem 15 Find the mistake

1. Ma sœur s’appelle Awa. · 2. Elle a trois frères. · 3. Il est marié. · 4. Julie présente sa mère. · 5. Je n’ai pas d’enfants.

Problem 16 Reading: Binta’s family

1. Elle habite à Montréal. · 2. Il a quatre ans. · 3. C’est son mari. · 4. Ils habitent à Dakar. · 5. Non, il est célibataire.

Problem 17 Translate longer sentences

1. Notre fille habite chez ses grands-parents. · 2. Tu as des frères et sœurs ? · 3. Mes parents sont divorcés, mais ils sont sympas. · 4. Leur fils a sept ans. · 5. J’ai un frère et je n’ai pas de sœur.

Problem 18 Change the owner

1. Elle adore sa famille. · 2. Vous appelez votre frère. · 3. Ils invitent leurs cousins. · 4. Je présente ma sœur. · 5. Nous aimons nos parents. Verb and possessive both change with the subject.

Problem 19 Build the sentence

1. Mon frère s’appelle Yanis. · 2. Ma grand-mère a quatre-vingt-cinq ans. · 3. Mes parents ne sont pas mariés. · 4. Ma sœur a deux enfants. · 5. Leur fille habite à Montréal.

Problem 20 Read the form

Model answer: Samia Rahmani est mariée. Son mari s’appelle Reda. Elle a deux enfants. Son fils Yanis a 9 ans et sa fille Lina a 5 ans.

Check: est mariée (feminine), son mari, avoir for ages, son fils and sa fille.
