Imparfait childhood memories: the lesson

When do you use the imparfait to talk about childhood?

Definition

The imparfait describes habits, repeated actions and situations in the past, without saying when they started or ended. It matches English “used to” or “would”: Je jouais dehors means “I used to play outside”.

Then and now: the imparfait for the past habit, the présent for today.

How do you form the imparfait?

Rule

Take the nous form of the present, remove -ons, and add the endings -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient. The only exception to the stem is être: ét-.

Other stems: nous finissons → finiss-, nous prenons → pren-, nous allons → all-, nous avons → av-. Spelling: je mangeais, elle commençait, but nous mangions, nous commencions.

Which words help you talk about the past and compare with today?

Examples

  • Quand j’étais petite, j’habitais à Fort-de-France. — When I was little, I lived in Fort-de-France.
  • Chaque été, nous allions chez mon oncle à Tahiti. — Every summer, we went to my uncle’s in Tahiti.
  • Ma mère faisait des beignets le dimanche. — My mother made doughnuts on Sundays.
  • Avant, je dormais dix heures ; aujourd’hui, je dors six heures. — I used to sleep ten hours; today I sleep six.

Useful words: toujours (always), souvent (often), tous les étés (every summer), d’habitude (usually), à cette époque (at that time), maintenant and aujourd’hui (for the contrast).

Watch out

Do not use the passé composé for a habit: Quand j’étais petit, j’ai joué au foot tous les jours sounds wrong. Say je jouais. And do not write j’étais as “I have been”: it means “I was”.

Culture note

Many French adults remember the colonies de vacances, summer camps of two or three weeks in the mountains or by the sea. Telling stories about them is a classic way to start a conversation about childhood.

Zoé’s tip

Think of an old film reel: the imparfait is the background that keeps rolling. Say nous, cut -ons, and add a ticket ending: -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient.

Key points to remember

  • The imparfait expresses past habits and states: je jouais means “I used to play”.
  • Stem: nous form minus -ons; endings -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient.
  • Être is the only irregular stem: j’étais, nous étions.
  • Spelling changes: je mangeais, elle commençait, but nous mangions.
  • Contrast the past with today using avant … aujourd’hui and the présent.

What is the difference between “used to” and “would” in French?

French uses the same tense for both: the imparfait. Nous allions à la plage can mean “we used to go” or “we would go” to the beach, when it describes a habit.

How do I compare my childhood with today?

Use the imparfait for the past and the présent for today, with signal words: avant, je dormais dix heures ; aujourd’hui, je dors six heures. Avant and aujourd’hui show the contrast clearly.
