Past conditional: the answers explained
Problem 1 Avoir or être?
Most verbs take avoir; motion verbs like aller, rester, tomber and all pronominal verbs take être.
1 A, 2 E, 3 A, 4 E, 5 A, 6 E, 7 E, 8 A
Problem 2 Past participles
Learn the irregular participles by heart.
1 pris, 2 vu, 3 venu, 4 ouvert, 5 mis, 6 écrit, 7 né, 8 bu
Problem 3 Conjugating with avoir
Conditional of avoir + participle.
1 j’aurais parlé, 2 tu aurais fini, 3 nous aurions vendu, 4 ils auraient regardé
Problem 4 Conjugating with être
The participle agrees with the subject.
1 elle serait allée, 2 nous serions arrivées, 3 je serais parti, 4 ils seraient restés, 5 vous seriez venue
Problem 5 Choose the right form
After si use the plus-que-parfait; in the other clause use the past conditional. Item 3 puts the result first.
1 serais venu, 2 serions arrivés, 3 aurait gagné, 4 avais
Problem 6 Match the halves
Match by logic: an umbrella and staying dry, a canceled game and fans at the stadium, a tournament win and a medal, getting up early and a sunrise.
A–2, B–3, C–4, D–1
Problem 7 The si-clause
Plus-que-parfait = imperfect of the auxiliary + participle.
1 Si Inès était arrivée, 2 Si nous n’avions pas raté, 3 Si tu avais fini, 4 Si les élèves s’étaient préparés
Problem 8 The result clause
Choose the auxiliary, then the participle. The last item has a masculine plural object before the verb, so the participle agrees with it: vous here refers to several people.
1 aurait acheté, 2 serais passé, 3 serait arrivé, 4 aurions entendus
Problem 9 Mehdi’s bad Monday
Model answers; each needs a plus-que-parfait after si and a past conditional in the result.
Si Mehdi s’était réveillé à 7 h, il n’aurait pas raté le bus. Si Mehdi n’avait pas raté le bus, il ne serait pas arrivé en retard au contrôle. S’il n’était pas arrivé en retard, il n’aurait pas perdu dix minutes de test.
Problem 10 English to French: si clauses
Same pattern each time; note the elision s’il in item 4.
1 Si elle avait appelé, j’aurais répondu. 2 Nous aurions gagné si nous nous étions entraînés davantage. 3 Si tu m’avais prévenue, je ne serais pas partie. 4 Fatou aurait pris le train s’il n’y avait pas eu de grève.
Problem 11 Reproaches
After aurais dû the infinitive follows. Other correct answers are possible.
1 Tu aurais dû vérifier ton sac. 2 Tu aurais dû prévenir ton professeur. 3 Tu aurais dû faire attention à ton téléphone.
Problem 12 Pronominal verbs
Pronominal verbs take être, so the participle agrees with the subject.
1 Sofia se serait réveillée, 2 nous nous serions perdus, 3 les filles se seraient amusées, 4 tu te serais trompée
Problem 13 Correct the mistake
1 no conditional after si; 2 aller takes être; 3 agreement with elle; 4 infinitive after devoir.
1 Si j’avais su, je serais venue. 2 Nous serions allés à Lyon. 3 Elle serait arrivée à l’heure. 4 Tu aurais dû partir plus tôt.
Problem 14 Express a regret
The infinitive follows; the facts are negative but the regret is positive.
1 J’aurais voulu visiter le Vieux-Québec. 2 Nous aurions voulu aller en Martinique. 3 Elle aurait aimé rencontrer le chanteur. 4 Ils auraient voulu apprendre le wolof.
Problem 15 French to English
Translate the meaning, not word for word.
1 If the teacher had known, he would not have given us homework. 2 You should have booked earlier. 3 I could have stayed in Bordeaux. 4 If they had left at noon, they would have arrived before dark.
Problem 16 Léa’s exam day
Negative conditions in the plus-que-parfait; positive results in the past conditional.
Si Léa ne s’était pas couchée à 1 h, elle se serait levée en forme. Si elle n’avait pas oublié sa calculatrice, elle aurait fini l’épreuve. Si elle n’avait pas pris le mauvais bus, elle serait arrivée à l’heure.
Problem 17 Weekend in Liège
Read for the cause (rain) and the two conditionals.
1 It rained all day. 2 They would have walked up to the top of the Citadelle and Karim would have taken many photos. 3 He would have liked to taste waffles at the market. 4 For example nous serions montés (infinitive: monter), j’aurais pris (prendre) or il aurait aimé (aimer).
Problem 18 Combine with si
Make the real fact negative in the plus-que-parfait; the real result becomes its opposite.
1 Si j’avais révisé, j’aurais réussi. 2 Si nous n’avions pas raté le train, nous ne serions pas arrivés en retard. 3 Si elle avait écouté le conseil, elle ne se serait pas trompée. 4 S’ils n’avaient pas oublié leur carte, ils auraient pu entrer.
Problem 19 Longer translation
Mind the agreement with the feminine je and the pronominal verb in item 3.
1 Si j’avais su que le musée était fermé le lundi, j’y serais allée le mardi. 2 Nina aurait aimé étudier à Montréal, mais elle n’avait pas économisé assez d’argent. 3 Nous ne nous serions jamais rencontrés si tu ne t’étais pas inscrit au club de français.
Problem 20 A plan that failed
Model: Samedi, notre match a été annulé. Si l’arbitre était arrivé à l’heure, nous aurions joué. Si j’avais vérifié l’horaire, je ne serais pas venu pour rien. Tu aurais dû me prévenir ! J’aurais voulu marquer un but devant mes parents.
Check: two si + plus-que-parfait sentences, one reproach, one regret, correct auxiliaries and agreement, no conditional after si.
