Past subjunctive: the answers explained

Problem 1 Subjunctive of avoir

The irregular subjunctive of avoir must be memorized.

1 aie, 2 aies, 3 ait, 4 ayons, 5 ayez, 6 aient

Problem 2 Subjunctive of être

The singular forms sound the same for je, tu and elle.

1 sois, 2 sois, 3 soit, 4 soyons, 5 soyez, 6 soient

Problem 3 Past participles

Watch the irregular ones: dire, savoir, croire, pouvoir, apprendre.

1 choisi, 2 rendu, 3 dit, 4 su, 5 descendu, 6 cru, 7 pu, 8 appris

Problem 4 Conjugating with avoir

Subjunctive of avoir + participle.

Problem 5 Conjugating with être

Subjunctive of être + participle that agrees with the subject.

Problem 6 Present or past?

Look at the time word: demain = later (present); hier soir, toute la nuit, la semaine dernière = earlier (past).

1 viennes, 2 sois venu, 3 ait plu, 4 ait compris

Problem 7 Complete with the past subjunctive

Use the subjunctive of avoir or être and the participle; in item 1 the negation surrounds the auxiliary.

Problem 8 Reacting to three messages

Model answers; each needs the subjunctive of avoir and a participle, because the news is already past.

Problem 9 Join with bien que

Bien que always takes the subjunctive; the past form shows the earlier action. Item 2 uses a pronominal verb, so it takes être and agrees.

Problem 10 Infinitive or subjunctive?

One subject: infinitive. Two subjects: que + subjunctive. In item 4 the subject is nous in both clauses.

1 d’avoir gagné, 2 que ma sœur ait gagné, 3 d’être partie, 4 d’avoir rendu

Problem 11 English to French: feelings

Subjunctive trigger + past subjunctive.

Problem 12 Correct the mistake

Problem 13 Show the earlier action

Replace the present subjunctive by the past subjunctive of the same verb.

Problem 14 Before the deadline

The past subjunctive can show a completion required before a future moment.

Problem 15 French to English

Translate the meaning, not word for word.

1 I am happy that you found the way. 2 It is possible that it snowed. 3 Although we arrived early, the room was full. 4 I don’t think she lied.

Problem 16 Which structure?

1 one subject, so past infinitive; 2 earlier action, so past subjunctive; 3 later action, so present subjunctive; 4 one subject, so past infinitive.

1 d’avoir gagné, 2 ait gagné, 3 gagne, 4 d’être arrivée

Problem 17 A message from Annecy

Look for aies décidé, ait été retardé and aies dormi.

1 That Mia decided to spend the summer in Annecy. 2 They waited for her with crêpes. 3 That Mia did not sleep on the plane. 4 Because the resting is still to come, after the trigger, so the action is later, not earlier.

Problem 18 Build the sentence

Problem 19 Longer translation

Mind the agreement in item 1 and the conditional of future-in-the-past in item 2.

Problem 20 A thank-you message

Check: two subjonctif passé sentences, one bien que, one past infinitive, correct auxiliaries and agreement.
