Problem 1 Replace the verb with a noun

  1. la baisse des salaires

A noun phrase is shorter and more abstract than a full sentence.

Problem 2 One word for the list

  1. les céréales
  2. les transports en commun
  3. les arbres
  4. les langues

A summary names the category, not every example.

Problem 3 Keep or delete

Sentences a and c state general ideas. Sentence b is an example and sentence d is a personal remark.

Keep: a and c.

Problem 4 Compute the word limit

  1. 800 ÷ 4 = 200; range 180 to 220: 200 words (180–220)
  2. 450 ÷ 3 = 150; range 135 to 165: 150 words (135–165)
  3. 10 % of 120 = 12: 108 to 132 words

Problem 5 Choose the reporting verb

  1. dénonce (a criticism)
  2. affirme (a statement)
  3. conclut (the end of the argument)
  4. souligne (points out an extra idea)

Other choices are possible for 2 and 3; the point is to vary the verbs.

Problem 6 Clause to phrase

  1. à cause de la grève
  2. en raison de la forte chaleur
  3. malgré le bruit
  4. en cas de baisse des prix

Problem 7 Relative clause to adjective

  1. des familles modestes
  2. une rue passante
  3. un village désert
  4. un quartier bruyant

Agreement: the adjective follows the noun in gender and number.

  2. Remove the opinion: L’auteur estime que la ville est trop bruyante.
  3. Reformulate, no quotation: Le texte regrette que les piétons soient oubliés.
  4. Present tense: L’auteur explique que le vélo est plus rapide.

Problem 11 Read and pick the best summary

Choice b is only a detail of the text. Choice c says the opposite of the last sentence. Choice a states the central idea and its consequence.

Answer: a.

Problem 12 Put the summary in order

Introduction (b), description (d), result (e), contrast (c), conclusion (a).

Order: b – d – e – c – a.

Problem 13 Shorten the sentence

Model answers (other versions are possible):

  1. Les habitants demandent à la municipalité d’agir contre le bruit.
  2. Beaucoup de gens sous-estiment le gaspillage alimentaire.

  2. le développement du vélo (or: les aménagements cyclables)
  3. les freins des automobilistes (or: la peur du danger)

Check that each phrase is a noun phrase and contains no example.

Problem 15 Spot the hidden opinion

Sentence b contains heureusement and évidente, two personal judgments.

Problem 16 Summarize in 30 words

Model answer (32 words):

Le télétravail fait gagner du temps et réduit les coûts, mais il isole certains salariés et affaiblit les échanges. Beaucoup d’entreprises adoptent donc un rythme mixte, apprécié par la plupart des équipes.

Les cafés de village ferment, et les habitants, surtout les personnes âgées, perdent un lieu de rencontre. Pour y remédier, des communes rachètent le café et le confient à des associations ; par conséquent, la vie sociale revient dans ces villages.

Problem 18 Rewrite a bad summary

Model answer (22 words):

Problem 19 Summarize in context

Model answer (36 words):

Un festival près de Liège a remplacé les gobelets jetables par des gobelets consignés, ce qui a réduit les déchets et facilité le nettoyage. Malgré quelques files d’attente, le public approuve et d’autres festivals pourraient suivre.

Check: the measure, its result, the minor complaint and the outlook are present, with no detail beyond the essential.

Problem 20 Guided writing from notes

Model answer (45 words):

Un marché de Fort-de-France vend des paniers de fruits invendus. Les clients dépensent moins, les marchands jettent moins, et les paniers partent en une heure. Séduite par ce succès, la mairie souhaite étendre l’initiative à d’autres marchés de la ville, avec l’aide des commerçants volontaires.

Check: the five notes are merged into three sentences, and the length is between 40 and 50 words.
