French simple future (futur simple): formation, uses and practice

French verb conjugation: 150 verbs in every tense

The French simple future (le futur simple) is easy to build because the endings are always the same: they are the present tense of avoir. The tricky parts are the irregular stems and the way French handles “when” clauses.

The essentials: The futur simple expresses “will”. Take the whole infinitive (drop the final -e of -re verbs) and add -ai, -as, -a, -ons, -ez, -ont. About twenty frequent verbs have an irregular stem (ser-, aur-, ir-, fer-, …), but the endings never change. After quand, dès que and lorsque, French uses the future where English uses the present.

When do you use the futur simple?

Use French English
Plans and predictions Demain, il fera beau. Tomorrow the weather will be nice.

For the near future, French also uses aller + infinitive: Je vais partir. (I am going to leave). It is more common in speech.

How do you form the futur simple?

Infinitive + endings. For verbs in -re, remove the final e first (vendre becomes vendr-).

Common mistakes English speakers make

  • Using the present after quand. English says “when he arrives”, French says quand il arrivera.
  • Using the future after si. “If it rains, we will stay” is S’il pleut, nous resterons: si + present, then future.
  • Using vouloir for “will”. Je veux means “I want”. For the future, use the futur simple.
  • Writing je serai as je serais: -ai is the future, -ais the conditional. They sound alike in some accents, so check the context.
  • Forgetting the double r in courir (je courrai), mourir (je mourrai) and voir (je verrai).
