French present conditional: formation, uses and practice

French verb conjugation: 150 verbs in every tense

The French conditional (le conditionnel présent) is easy once you know the future: same stem, different endings. English speakers must be careful, because “would” can also mean a past habit, which French expresses with the imperfect.

The essentials: The conditional is the French “would”. Take the future stem (parler-, finir-, ir-, ser-, aur-…) and add the imparfait endings -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient. Use it for polite requests (je voudrais), advice (tu devrais), wishes, and the result of an “if” clause (si j’avais le temps, je viendrais). Never use it right after si.

When do you use the conditional?

Use French English
Polite request Pourriez-vous m’aider ? Could you help me?
Polite wish Je voudrais un café, s’il vous plaît. I would like a coffee, please.
Advice Tu devrais dormir plus. You should sleep more.
Result of an “if” clause Si j’avais le temps, je voyagerais. If I had time, I would travel.
Dream or imaginary situation À ta place, je dirais la vérité. In your place, I would tell the truth.
Future in the past (reported speech) Il a dit qu’il viendrait. He said he would come.
Unconfirmed information (news) Selon la presse, le ministre démissionnerait. According to the press, the minister is said to be resigning.

How do you form the conditional?

Future stem + imparfait endings. The future stem is the infinitive (without the final e for -re verbs), or the irregular stem.

Subject Ending parler finir vendre
je -ais je parlerais je finirais je vendrais
tu -ais tu parlerais tu finirais tu vendrais
il / elle -ait il parlerait il finirait il vendrait
nous -ions nous parlerions nous finirions nous vendrions
vous -iez vous parleriez vous finiriez vous vendriez
ils / elles -aient ils parleraient ils finiraient ils vendraient

Irregular stems are the same as in the futur simple:

Verb Stem Example
être ser- je serais
avoir aur- j’aurais
aller ir- j’irais
faire fer- je ferais
voir verr- je verrais
pouvoir pourr- je pourrais
vouloir voudr- je voudrais
devoir devr- je devrais
savoir saur- je saurais
venir viendr- je viendrais

The “if” pattern

Condition (si +) Result Example
présent futur S’il pleut, nous resterons.
imparfait conditionnel présent S’il pleuvait, nous resterions.
plus-que-parfait conditionnel passé S’il avait plu, nous serions restés.

Rule: the conditional never appears in the si clause. Say Si j’avais de l’argent, j’achèterais une voiture, never Si j’aurais….

Common mistakes English speakers make

  • Using the conditional after si: Si je serais riche is wrong. Use Si j’étais riche.
  • Translating “would” for past habits with the conditional. “We would go to the beach every summer” is Nous allions à la plage chaque été (imparfait).
  • Confusing je pourrai (future, “I will be able to”) and je pourrais (conditional, “I could”).
  • Translating “should” with devrais only for advice. For “I should have”, use the past conditional: j’aurais dû.
  • Writing je voudrai for je voudrais or j’irai for j’irais. The final -s makes it a conditional.
être avoir aller faire
je serais j’aurais j’irais je ferais
tu serais tu aurais tu irais tu ferais
il serait il aurait il irait il ferait
nous serions nous aurions nous irions nous ferions
vous seriez vous auriez vous iriez vous feriez
ils seraient ils auraient ils iraient ils feraient
