French imperfect tense (imparfait): formation, uses and practice

French verb conjugation: 150 verbs in every tense

The French imperfect (l’imparfait) is the tense of “used to”, “was …ing” and “would” in the past. English speakers often hesitate between it and the passé composé, so this lesson focuses on that choice.

The essentials: The imparfait describes the past as a background: habits (“I used to…”), ongoing actions (“I was…ing”), descriptions and states. Take the nous form of the present, remove -ons, and add -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient. Only être is irregular (j’étais). Use it with the passé composé: imparfait sets the scene, passé composé tells what happened.

When do you use the imparfait?

Use French English
Habit in the past Quand j’étais petit, je jouais au foot tous les jours. When I was little, I played (used to play) soccer every day.
Action in progress Il pleuvait quand nous sommes sortis. It was raining when we went out.
Description, weather, age Elle avait dix ans. Le ciel était gris. She was ten. The sky was gray.
Feelings and states Je voulais partir, mais j’avais peur. I wanted to leave, but I was afraid.
Polite wish or suggestion Si on allait au cinéma ? What if we went to the movies?
After si (hypothesis) Si j’avais le temps, je viendrais. If I had the time, I would come.

Key idea: the imparfait does not say whether the action ended. It is a “film in progress”. The passé composé is a “photo” of a finished event.

How do you form the imparfait?

Take the nous form of the present tense, drop -ons, and add the endings below. The endings are the same for every verb.

Imparfait or passé composé?

Question to ask Imparfait Passé composé
Was the action repeated or habitual? Je prenais le bus. (I used to take the bus.) J’ai pris le bus hier. (I took the bus yesterday.)
Is it a background description? Il faisait beau. (The weather was nice.) Il a fait beau trois jours. (It was nice for three days.)
Was it interrupted? Je dormais quand le téléphone a sonné. I was sleeping when the phone rang.
Is it a single finished event? – Elle est arrivée à huit heures. (She arrived at eight.)

Typical time words: souvent, toujours, chaque jour, d’habitude, autrefois, pendant que go with the imparfait; un jour, soudain, hier, à huit heures, ce matin go with the passé composé.

Common mistakes English speakers make

  • Using the passé composé for every English “was” or “had”. States of mind and descriptions (J’avais faim, Il était fatigué) are normally imparfait.
  • Translating “would” (habit in the past) with the conditional. “When I was young, we would go to the sea” is Quand j’étais jeune, nous allions à la mer.
  • Forgetting the double i: nous étudiions, vous riiez.
  • Writing -ai instead of -ais for je: je parlais (imparfait) versus je parlai (passé simple).
