French passé composé: avoir or être, agreement and practice

French verb conjugation: 150 verbs in every tense

The passé composé is the tense you will use most to talk about the past in French. It looks like the English present perfect (I have eaten), but it also translates the simple past (I ate). Two choices make it tricky: which auxiliary, and whether the participle agrees.

The essentials: The passé composé is the everyday French past tense: it covers “I ate”, “I have eaten” and “I did eat”. Build it with the present of avoir or être plus the past participle. Use être for about seventeen verbs of movement or change (aller, venir, arriver, partir…) and for all pronominal verbs; the participle then agrees with the subject. With avoir, it agrees only with a direct object placed before the verb.

When do you use the passé composé?

Use French English
Finished action in the past Hier, j’ai visité le musée. Yesterday I visited the museum.
Past action with a present result J’ai perdu mes clés. I have lost my keys.
Series of events in a story Il s’est levé, il a pris son café et il est parti. He got up, had his coffee and left.
Action repeated a specific number of times Nous sommes allés trois fois à Rome. We went to Rome three times.
Conversation about the recent past Ce matin, j’ai pris le train. This morning I took the train.

French has one tense where English has three (I ate, I have eaten, I did eat). To describe habits, settings and ongoing actions in the past, use the imperfect instead.

Avoir or être?

Most verbs use avoir. These use être:

  • Seventeen verbs of movement or change of state: aller, venir, arriver, partir, entrer, sortir, monter, descendre, rester, tomber, naître, mourir, retourner, devenir, revenir, rentrer, passer. Mnemonic: a house with floors to climb (monter, descendre), doors (entrer, sortir), and a life from naître to mourir.
  • All pronominal (reflexive) verbs: je me suis levée.

Several of these verbs take avoir when they have a direct object: Elle a sorti le chien (She took the dog out), Il a monté les valises, J’ai descendu l’escalier, Nous avons passé nos vacances en Italie, Il a rentré le linge.

Agreement of the past participle

  • With être: the participle agrees with the subject (add -e for feminine, -s for plural).
  • With avoir: no agreement with the subject. It agrees only with a direct object that comes before the verb: J’ai acheté la robe. but La robe que j’ai achetée est rouge. and Je les ai vus. (les is masculine plural).
  • Pronominal verbs: the participle agrees with the reflexive pronoun when it is the direct object: Elle s’est lavée. but Elle s’est lavé les mains. (the direct object, les mains, follows).

Negation, questions and adverbs

  • Negation wraps the auxiliary: Je n’ai pas mangé., Elle n’est jamais venue..
  • Short adverbs usually sit between the auxiliary and the participle: J’ai déjà fini., Il a beaucoup travaillé..
  • Inversion questions invert only the auxiliary: As-tu mangé ?, Est-elle partie ?.

Common mistakes English speakers make

  • Using avoir for “I went”: J’ai allé is wrong, say Je suis allé.
  • Using être for every verb, as in English “I am finished”. Only the seventeen verbs above and pronominal verbs take être: J’ai mangé, not Je suis mangé.
  • Forgetting agreement with être: Elle est arrivé should be Elle est arrivée.
  • Using the passé composé for “I used to…”, which needs the imperfect: Je jouais au tennis (habit), J’ai joué au tennis hier (one event).
  • Putting the negation in the wrong place: J’ai pas mangé is spoken French; in writing use Je n’ai pas mangé.
