French si clauses: the answers explained

Problem 1 Identify the type

1-A, 2-B, 3-C. Present + future is likely; imperfect + conditional is imagined; pluperfect + past conditional is unreal past.

Problem 2 Present then future

1 envoies, lirai · 2 est, devrons · 3 finit, ira. After si the verb stays in the present; the future is in the main clause.

Problem 3 Conjugate in the future

1 aurai · 2 iras · 3 fera · 4 pourrons · 5 verront · 6 serez. These stems are irregular and worth memorizing.

Problem 4 Conjugate in the imperfect

1 finissions · 2 voyageais · 3 étiez · 4 prenaient. Start from the nous form of the present; keep the e in voyageais.

Problem 5 Conjugate in the conditional

1 voudrais · 2 pourrais · 3 irait · 4 ferions. The conditional uses the future stem with imperfect endings.

Problem 6 Choose the verb form

1 avait · 2 était · 3 cliquez. The main clause conditional (visiterait, regarderions) requires the imperfect; the future (s’ouvrira) requires the present.

Problem 7 Read the timeline

Model answers: Dans cinq ans, des robots-livreurs circuleront à Bordeaux. Dans dix ans, un tuteur virtuel enseignera les langues. Dans vingt ans, des bus sans conducteur rouleront à Montréal.

Check: future endings and correct plural agreement.

Problem 8 Imagined situations

1 avions, créerions · 2 savait, construirait · 3 achèterais, avais · 4 ferais, tombait. Imperfect after si, conditional in the main clause.

Problem 9 Si with the imperative

1 branche-le · 2 appuie · 3 vérifiez. The imperative matches the person: tu drops the s of -er verbs.

Problem 10 Correct the mistake

1 Si j’avais un drone · 2 Si elle étudie ce soir · 3 nous n’aurions pas cliqué · 4 si tu venais. Never use the conditional or the future after si; sentence 3 needs the past conditional because the situation is over.

Problem 11 Translate the sentences

1 Si j’avais un robot, il nettoierait ma chambre. 2 Si le Wi-Fi marche, nous regarderons le film. 3 Si tu appuies sur ce bouton, l’écran s’allume.

Problem 12 Regrets about the past

1 avions mis, serait tombé · 2 avait appris, aurait pu · 3 aviez sauvegardé, n’auriez pas perdu. Check the negation around the auxiliary.

Problem 13 Read the news item

a) It will buy ten more vehicles next year. b) Many people would use it. c) That jobs would disappear if drivers were removed.

Problem 14 Read the text messages

1 A likely hypothesis: present + future. 2 se retrouvera. The full sentence is Si le prof annule, on se retrouvera au café.

Problem 15 Report with the conditional

1 Selon la presse, le nouveau téléphone serait disponible en mars. 2 Selon la presse, le projet coûterait cinq millions d’euros. The conditional signals doubt.

Problem 16 Mixed hypotheses

1 avaient, liraient · 2 avais eu, aurais essayé · 3 tient, pourras · 4 pleut, resterons. Identify the type before conjugating.

Problem 17 Write your predictions

Model answer: Dans vingt ans, les élèves travailleront avec des tuteurs virtuels. Les manuels papier auront presque disparu. Si les écoles investissent assez, tous les élèves auront un ordinateur. Si je dirigeais un lycée, je garderais quand même des cours en groupe. Les professeurs resteront essentiels.

Check: three futures, two different si types, accents.

Problem 18 Translate the paragraph

Si j’étais maire de Nantes, j’installerais des bornes de recharge gratuites dans chaque parc. Les habitants les utiliseraient tous les jours et la ville économiserait de l’énergie. Si l’expérience réussit l’année prochaine, d’autres villes l’imiteront. Si nous avions commencé plus tôt, nous aurions déjà des résultats.

Problem 19 Rewrite with si

1 Si nous avions un meilleur réseau, nous pourrions jouer en ligne. 2 Si tu ne m’avais pas aidé, je n’aurais pas terminé ce programme. 3 S’il y a une panne, appelle le technicien.

Problem 20 Invent a technology

Model answer: Si je pouvais inventer une technologie, je créerais un casier intelligent qui rappelle les devoirs. Si un élève oublie son livre, le casier lui enverrait un message. Si nous avions eu cet outil l’an dernier, nous aurions perdu moins de temps. Si le prototype fonctionne, je le présenterai au proviseur.

Check: one si clause of each type, correct pairs, clear idea.
