Avoir: the answers explained

Problem 1 Fill in avoir

1. a; 2. avons; 3. ai; 4. ont; 5. as; 6. avez. Match each subject with its form; Yasmine = elle, so a.

Problem 2 Match the expressions

1-d; 2-a; 3-e; 4-b; 5-c. These expressions are fixed: avoir sommeil = sleepy, avoir peur = afraid.

Problem 3 Read the thermometers

1. froid; 2. chaud; 3. bien. A shows -4 °C (cold), B shows 36 °C (hot), C shows 21 °C (comfortable, so Elle est bien uses être).

Problem 4 Conjugate the sentence

1. Nous avons un cahier. 2. Elle a une idée. 3. Ils ont deux frères. 4. J’ai un problème. Remember the elision j’ai.

Problem 5 Choose the right form

1. ont; 2. as; 3. avons; 4. a. Ils → ont, tu → as, nous → avons, elle → a.

Problem 6 Translate short phrases

1. J’ai faim. 2. Nous avons froid. 3. Elle a soif. 4. Ils (Elles) ont sommeil. 5. Tu as raison. French uses avoir, not être, for these feelings.

Problem 7 Which expression fits?

1. sommeil; 2. chaud; 3. peur; 4. faim (soif is also possible for 4). The sentence context decides: midnight → sleepy, 38 °C → hot, huge dog → afraid.

Problem 8 How old are they?

1. My brother needs a new bike. 2. We are sleepy on Monday mornings. 3. You are wrong, but that is kind. 4. They (women) are afraid of storms. Avoir peur de = to be afraid of.

Problem 10 Make it negative

1. Je n’ai pas de portable. 2. Tu n’as pas de devoirs. 3. Nous n’avons pas de voiture. 4. Elle n’a pas d’ami à Dakar. After pas, un/une/des become de or d’ before a vowel.
