French pluperfect (plus-que-parfait): formation, uses and practice

French verb conjugation: 150 verbs in every tense

The French pluperfect (le plus-que-parfait) works like the English past perfect (I had finished). If you master the passé composé, you already know the rules for the auxiliary and agreement: only the auxiliary changes from the present to the imparfait.

The essentials: The plus-que-parfait is the French “had + participle”. Use the imparfait of avoir or être plus the past participle: j’avais fini, elle était partie. It places an action before another past action, appears in reported speech and in the “if I had known…” structure. Agreement and the avoir/être choice follow the passé composé.

When do you use the plus-que-parfait?

Use French English
Action before another past action Quand je suis arrivé, le film avait déjà commencé. When I arrived, the movie had already started.
Reported speech in the past Elle a dit qu’elle avait perdu son sac. She said she had lost her bag.
Cause of a past situation Il était fatigué : il avait mal dormi. He was tired: he had slept badly.
Regret or hypothesis (si + pluperfect) Si j’avais su, je serais venu. If I had known, I would have come.
Past habit completed before another Chaque fois qu’il avait fini, il sortait. Every time he had finished, he went out.

How do you form the plus-que-parfait?

Imparfait of avoir or être + past participle.

parler finir aller se lever
j’avais parlé j’avais fini j’étais allé(e) je m’étais levé(e)
tu avais parlé tu avais fini tu étais allé(e) tu t’étais levé(e)
il avait parlé il avait fini il était allé il s’était levé
nous avions parlé nous avions fini nous étions allé(e)s nous nous étions levé(e)s
vous aviez parlé vous aviez fini vous étiez allé(e)(s) vous vous étiez levé(e)(s)
ils avaient parlé ils avaient fini ils étaient allés ils s’étaient levés

The participle agrees exactly as in the passé composé: with the subject for être (elle était allée), and with a preceding direct object for avoir (les lettres qu’il avait écrites).

Negation and word order

  • Negation wraps the auxiliary: Je n’avais pas fini., Elle n’était jamais venue..
  • In a question, invert the auxiliary: Avais-tu déjà mangé ?.
  • Pronouns come before the auxiliary: Je l’avais vu., Nous les avions achetés..

Pluperfect or passé composé?

Situation French
Two past events in the order they happened Il a fini son travail, puis il est parti.
Second event happened first (flashback) Il est parti après avoir fini / Quand il est parti, il avait fini son travail.
Background for a past scene Elle ne reconnaissait pas la ville : tout avait changé.

English often uses the simple past where French insists on the plus-que-parfait: “She told me she lost her keys” is Elle m’a dit qu’elle avait perdu ses clés.

Common mistakes English speakers make

  • Skipping the pluperfect in reported speech: Il a dit qu’il a mangé is wrong; say Il a dit qu’il avait mangé.
  • Using the conditional after si: Si j’aurais su is wrong. The correct sequence is Si j’avais su, j’aurais compris.
  • Choosing the wrong auxiliary: Il avait allé should be Il était allé.
  • Forgetting to use the imparfait of the auxiliary: j’ai fini (passé composé) vs j’avais fini (pluperfect).
