Watch out with tenir

Use avoir

In compound tenses tenir takes avoir (j’ai tenu). The participle tenu agrees only with a direct object placed before the verb.

Irregular stems

Learn the stems, not the endings: the present is je tiens / nous tenons / ils tiennent, and the future and conditional use tiendr- (je tiendrai, je tiendrais).
